Kichidenji (3/4)

In the ground of this temple, there are Pagoda and Bell House. The Pagoda was built in 1643, the Bell House in 1775 respectively. Both were donated by many religious believers including famous persons.
The two-story Pagoda (height:12meters) is designated as an Important Cultural Asset by Government and it houses Dainichi Nyorai, literally great sun bodhissatva or cosmic Buddha.
At the New Year's Eve, many religious believers are gathering at the Bell House and each believer ring Joya-no-Kane (New Year's Eve bells--see below).

New Year's Eve bells
Beginning on New Year's Eve and continuing into New Year's Day, the bells in Buddhist temples in Japan are rung each year to announce the passing of the old year and the coming of the new. Because of the Buddhist belief that human beings are plagued by 108 earthly desires or passions (bonno), the bells are rung a total of 108 times with each toll of the bell, one desire is dispelled.
Click here, you can hear the sound of the bell (one time) recorded at the temple.
