precinct: Important cultural asset It is thought that this Cloister-gallery was built
soon after the Hall of Vision had been built. This is the oldest surviving Cloister-gallery
after that of Western Precinct. |

 | Shariden, Eden | Reliquary Hall and
Hall of paintings: Important cultural asset The reliquary hall ("Shariden": right side)
houses the relics of a Buddha. The Hall of Paintings ("Eden": left side) houses painted
"shoji", or sliding paper-doors, that depict the entire life of prince Shotoku. Although
the paintings were reproduced in 1787 and they are not disclosed today, original paintings
are stored in National Museum in Tokyo. |

Important
cultural asset Originally, at this position, the central gate of Eastern Precinct was
built along with the Cloister-Gallery. But, it was rebuilt as Hall of Worship in 1231. |

 | To-in Shoro | Bell house of Eastern
precinct: National treasure The house is constructed in a trapezoidal form known as
"hakamagoshi" (spreading skirt). Within it hangs a bell that has the words "Chuguji"
(currently neighbouring temple) engraved on the inside. |

Teachings: National treasure This hall was originally the private residence of
Tachibana-no-Konakachi, consort of the Emperor Shohmu (reigning period:724-748), and was brought
to the temple and converted into a Buddhist hall. |
