Eleven-Headed Kannon bodhissatva

At this temple, we can see a standing statue of Eleven-headed (Juichi-men) Kannon bodhissatva. It was manufactured in the late 10th century and it is designated as an Important cultural asset (the height: 3.5 meters).
Other religious arts which the temple holds are not displayed in this temple, but they may be disclosed in other museum.

The Kannon bodhissatva is the most popular Buddhist statue in Japan and it is supposed to save others who need someone's salvation.
There are various kinds of Kannon bodhissatva.
The Eleven-Headed Kannon bodhissatva is one of them, having small 10 heads on the head of the Kannon bodhissatva himself.
Some of faces of the small heads are merciful and some are in anger. It is believed that the eleven-headed Kannon bodhissatva will expel illness, watching 10 directions. In ancient India, the word of 10 directions means "all around".
